A green roof is defined as a contained green space on top of a human-made structure below, above or at grade¹. Each green roof is unique and can be designed in a variety of ways.
There are two general types of green roof systems:
- Extensive
- Thin (less than 6” of growing medium), light-weight system
- Best for retrofit projects, can be installed on almost any type of building
- Vegetation is usually limited to grasses and succulents, such as sedum

- Intensive
- Requires a thick growing medium (>6”) and more maintenance than an extensive system
- Allows for the planting of rooftop trees, shrubs, and even vegetable gardens
