What is a Green Roof?

A green roof is defined as a contained green space on top of a human-made structure below, above or at grade¹. Each green roof is unique and can be designed in a variety of ways.

There are two general types of green roof systems:

  • Extensive
    • Thin (less than 6” of growing medium), light-weight system
    • Best for retrofit projects, can be installed on almost any type of building
    • Vegetation is usually limited to grasses and succulents, such as sedum
  • Intensive
    • Requires a thick growing medium (>6”) and more maintenance than an extensive system
    • Allows for the planting of rooftop trees, shrubs, and even vegetable gardens
