Frequently Asked Questions

  • What species are in your pre-grown blankets and panels?
    • While we are able to do custom mixes with advanced notice, we also stock blankets and panels with the following mix of sedum species:
      • Sedum album
      • Sedum acre
      • Sedum sexangulare
      • Sedum reflexum
      • Sedum spurium Dragon’s Blood
      • Sedum ellacombianum
      • Sedum pulchellum
  • Can people walk on the green roof?
    • While constant walking is not recommended, most sedum species will tolerate occasional traffic.
  • What will a sedum green roof look like in the winter?
    • With the onset of winter and cooler temperatures, most sedum becomes dormant and turns burgundy. This keeps the roof looking natural and fresh all year long.
  • In what climate conditions does sedum grow best?
    • Generally, Sedum species are Northern Hemisphere plants. Most species thrive in direct sunlight and are very drought tolerant. Please see our plant catalog for more information and the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone for each species we carry.
  • How do I properly maintain my green roof once its installed?
    • We recommend that our sedum products be watered after installation and routinely watered for the next 2 weeks. Also, during an extended drought, a little bit of water is very beneficial to the plants. The level of maintenance differs from the blankets and panels (which are sold mature) and our plug plants. Because the plug plants grow, mature and spread on-site, this product requires a little more “TLC”.
  • Can pre-existing buildings be retrofitted for a green roof?
    • Many people have discovered the joy and benefits of installing a green roof on a pre-existing house or building. We recommend consulting a structural engineer and/or architect to determine the requirements for a green roof.
